Workshop
A workshop was
conducted on 17th May 2023, under India-EU Urban Partnership (IEUP)
support project at Kochi. The workshop centered around the theme of
"Establishing Solid Waste Management (SWM) Systems and Optimizing
Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) in Kochi."
The primary
objective of this workshop was to foster in-depth discussions and
collaboratively develop a comprehensive waste management plan that embodies the
principles of Circular Economy (CE) and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).
The discussions encompassed a wide range of topics, including harnessing the
full potential of ICCC for enhanced operational efficiency and decision-making,
sharing SWM implementation experiences, exploring the benefits of integrating
SWM with ICCC, standardizing data collection, ensuring legal support for
interoperability, clarifying roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders,
and understanding the various SWM systems available to identify the most
suitable model for Kochi city.
The workshop,
organized in close coordination with Kochi Municipal Corporation (KMC) and
Centre for Heritage, Environment and Development (C-HED), was graced by the
presence of esteemed speakers and experts in the field.
The technical
sessions witnessed engaging discussions among officials from Kochi, covering an
overview of SWM, addressing challenges faced, and sharing future plans.
Distinguished experts from the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) shed
light on their experiences in resolving SWM issues and emphasized the utility
of the Urban Platform for Online Governance (UPYOG) in SWM. IEUP Project
Experts also presented their perspectives on the ICCC roadmap in India and
proposed a framework for its adoption in Kochi, leveraging the immense
potential of these two thematic areas. The workshop concluded with an
interactive feedback session, providing participants with the opportunity to
share their thoughts and ideas with the Project Experts.
The workshop
was attended by more than 50 participants from organizations such as Kochi Municipal
Corporation (KMC), Cochin Smart Mission Limited, National Institute of Urban
Affairs (NIUA), The Indian Institute of Architects Cochin, AMRUT Kochi
Corporation, Clean Kerala Company Limited (CKCL), Ernakulam District Residents'
Associations' Apex Council (EDRAAC Ernakulam), and many others.
The collective
knowledge and expertise shared during the workshop is expected to contribute to
the development of sustainable waste management practices in Kochi.
